Pair of English Faux Bois Planters

Pair of English Faux Bois Planters

$3,200.00

This pair of mid-20th-century English faux bois planters, made by the Sanford Stone Studio, are richly evocative of the natural world. Crafted from durable stoneware, each is modeled in the form of a tree trunk, complete with two raised knots, deeply textured bark, and a wonderfully aged surface covered in garden patina—lichens, moss remnants, and traces of soil that speak to decades of outdoor life. Faux bois, French for “false wood,” originated in 19th-century France, where artisans used concrete and stoneware to mimic the textures of real wood in garden structures and vessels. Sanford Stone brought this tradition to England, translating the rustic charm of French béton brut into handcrafted stoneware forms that could endure English weather. Today, faux bois remains a favorite among garden designers and collectors for its romantic, organic feel and sculptural beauty. These planters are perfect on a terrace, tucked into borders, or flanking a garden path.
