18th Century Early American Turned Ash Burl Bowl on Custom Wall Mount
This compelling 18th-century burl ash bowl comes from the forests of the Northeastern Woodlands or Great Lakes region, where ash trees grow dense and wild, often producing the extraordinary burls prized by early makers. Unlike its hand-carved cousins, this example was turned on a lathe—its exterior marked by bold ribbed rings that spiral gently around the form. That detail suggests early American craftsmanship, though the bowl’s quiet simplicity still echoes the restrained forms long associated with Native-made vessels.
The lip is thicker, more deliberate, giving the piece a grounded, architectural presence. Yet the material steals the show: a remarkable burl whose grain swirls and flickers like moving water.
The result feels both rustic and sculptural—part tool, part study in wood itself.
Now mounted on a custom steel wall bracket, the bowl leaves the cupboard for the wall, where its form, texture, and history can be admired like the artwork it has quietly become.
