19th Century English Peat Bucket

19th Century English Peat Bucket

$1,250.00

This handsome peat bucket is a perfect example. Its body—turned with almost exuberant energy—swells and tapers in rhythmic rings of richly grained wood, the surface punctuated by bold ebonized bands that wrap around the circumference like tailored stripes. The effect is unexpectedly graphic, almost modern in its confidence.

At the top, a warm brass rim caps the form, accompanied by a gracefully arched handle and a removable brass liner inside, designed to hold the peat or coal that once fed the evening fire. Together, wood and metal strike a pleasing balance: tactile, durable, and quietly refined.

What began as a fireside necessity now reads as sculptural. The bold turning gives it movement, the striped ebonizing gives it drama, and the brass adds a touch of polish. Today, it feels equally at home beside a hearth filled with kindling—or simply admired as an object of form and craft.
