20th Century English Carved Oak Pear with Mouse
At first glance, it’s disarming. A hand carved oak pear, modest in scale, almost naive in its simplicity. Turn it, and the narrative shifts. Nestled into its reverse is a small carved mouse, caught mid gesture, hands raised to its mouth as if quietly stealing a moment.
The reference is unmistakable. While it can’t be attributed to Robert Thompson, the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement is fully present, a reverence for material, a commitment to handwork, and a sense that ornament should emerge naturally from form.
The oak carries a soft, time earned patina, its surface gently worked rather than over finished. There is intention in the restraint, the pear left largely unadorned, the mouse tucked just out of immediate view.
It is part object, part discovery. Not overtly decorative, not purely functional, just enough narrative to reward a second look, and enough craft to hold it.
