The hammer marks are the signature here, not a name, but the evidence of the hand that made it. This early 20th-century American copper tray belongs squarely to the Arts & Crafts tradition, when the slight irregularities of handwork were considered an antidote to the increasingly mechanized world.

Oval in form, the tray has been worked entirely by hand, its warm copper surface retaining the rhythmic impressions of the hammer. Two substantial handles, themselves hammered, are applied at either end. Around the perimeter runs its only flourish: a restrained double-helix motif, stamped into the copper and filled with a contrasting white composite material. It is an unexpectedly graphic detail against an otherwise elemental form.

There is no maker’s mark, and perhaps none is needed. The material, workmanship, and quiet geometry place it convincingly within the American Arts & Crafts movement. Useful, handsome, it has acquired the mellow, mottled surface that only old copper gets right.
