Early 19th Century American Iron Horse Weathervane on Custom Wall Mount

$4,800.00

All muscle and motion, this early 19th-century American running horse weathervane still seems to gallop across whatever space it occupies. Fashioned from hand-wrought iron sheets—riveted together in multiple places to achieve its generous scale—it’s both a feat of craftsmanship and a classic expression of American folk art. Once mounted high above a rooftop, catching the wind and marking its direction, it now carries the softened edges and layered patina that only two centuries can produce. Two bullet holes, a common badge of service for weathervanes (many a young marksman used them for target practice), only deepen its character. The original mounting slot remains on the reverse, a reminder of its working life, while a custom steel wall mount allows it to be displayed as sculpture—equally commanding in a loft, study, or above a mantel. Folk art at its most dynamic, it’s history caught mid-stride.
