19th Century Swiss Black Forest Mirror

19th Century Swiss Black Forest Mirror
There is something unmistakably romantic about the Swiss Black Forest tradition—where craftsmanship leans into illusion, and wood is coaxed into becoming something almost alive. This late 19th-century fire screen is a perfect expression of that sensibility.
The frame is carved in faux bois, each surface worked to mimic the texture of natural branches, complete with knots, grain, and gentle irregularities. A leafy vine winds its way around the perimeter, twisting and curling with a sense of quiet movement, as though it has grown there over time rather than been shaped by hand.
Now reimagined with a newly installed mirror in place of its original fabric panel, the piece takes on an entirely new life. It reflects light while preserving its sculptural presence, functioning as both object and utility. Placed above a mantel or along a wall, it reads as something between decoration and illusion—nature interpreted, then elevated, through the lens of 19th-century Alpine design.
