'Strangers in Taos,' Artist's-Proof Serigraph by Louis de Mayo

$2,800.00

A 20th century artist-proof serigraph by Arizona artist Louis de Mayo (American, 1926-2016) titled, 'Strangers in Taos,' and depicting three figures standing at back of the San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church in Taos, New Mexico while a large billowing cloud fills the lower portion of a vivid blue sky.

De Mayo, originally from Philadelphia, moved to Arizona in 1973 and devoted his career to depicting Native Americans of the Southwest United States. Bridging modernism and realism, de Mayo tells us that, "The features in my figures are usually obscured and lack individual identity. They become generic, lost and out of place in contemporary landscapes. In contrast to the current mode of dress, they seem baroque; artifacts reminiscent of an age gone by when the world was not mechanized. Perhaps symbolic of the haunting disquiet that afflicts us all and will persist into the space age.”
