Mid-20th Century Chippendale-Style Ottoman

Mid-20th Century Chippendale-Style Ottoman

$3,200.00

Thomas Chippendale knew a thing or two about making an entrance. When his celebrated Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director appeared in 1754, it introduced a generation of craftsmen to furniture that was as much about swagger as sophistication. Those glorious cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet became signatures of the style, particularly in colonial America, where the Englishman's influence took on a life of its own.

This handsome mid-20th-century American ottoman borrows liberally from that tradition. Its beautifully carved legs, scrolling knees, and wonderfully sculptural feet give the piece a decidedly aristocratic air, without taking itself too seriously.

We've recently upholstered the generously cushioned top in a richly textured ottoman weave, finished with traditional brass nailheads. The contrast between the tailored upholstery and exuberant carving is particularly satisfying.

Ottoman or bench, it's equally convincing in either role. And rather more comfortable than anything Mr. Chippendale might have imagined.
