19th Century French Regency Gilt-Painted and Caned Tub Chair

19th Century French Regency Gilt-Painted and Caned Tub Chair

$5,600.00

This 19th-century French Regency tub chair distills the language of its period with uncommon clarity and confidence. A deep, near-black green ground sets the stage—rich, saturated, and quietly dramatic—allowing the gilt decoration to read with heightened contrast and intensity. At the crest rail, a hand-painted gilt composition unfolds: paired griffins flank a classical urn, a signature Regency motif rendered with restraint rather than excess, signaling both classical reference and decorative ambition.

Gilded foliage trails down the arms in measured strokes, never overwhelming the structure, but instead tracing its contours with a sense of continuity. The enveloping caned back, seat, and inside arms—recently replaced—restore the chair’s intended lightness and comfort, introducing a subtle interplay between transparency and surface.

The four sabre legs, square in section yet curved in profile, ground the form with unmistakable Regency poise, each ending in brass casters. As an example of French Regency design, it is particularly well-resolved: balanced, legible, and confident, where ornament and architecture exist in precise, considered alignment.
