We found this bench in central Wisconsin, on Lake Winnebago, at a house perched at the water's edge—one of those places where the horizon feels earned. The rooms were lined with duck decoys and hunting trophies, the quiet evidence of seasons well spent outdoors. This bench had been made for the boot room, commissioned from a carver friend who signed and dated it discreetly in one corner.
Across the entire seat stretches a single Canada Goose, neck extended, wings outstretched in full, declarative glide. The bird is painted in layered grays, blacks, and whites against a sky-blue ground, while the base of the bench is rendered in deep hunter green.
It is functional, yes, but also reverent. A place to pull off boots, certainly. But more than that, a tribute to the hunt, the lake, and the friendships forged in both.
