Pair of Bart van Beckhoven Leather-Clad Dining Chairs
These have that wonderful quality of looking almost severe until you sit in them. Dutch designer Bart van Bekhoven has long worked in that territory, pairing architectural silhouettes with traditional craftsmanship and natural materials. His furniture is restrained, but never cold.
This pair of late 20th century dining armchairs is wrapped almost entirely in dark brown leather, so deep it can also read as black, right down to the square tapered legs. The leather has aged beautifully, giving all that disciplined geometry a softer, wonderfully lived-in surface. Look closely at the apron and there is one small flourish: the lower edge dips gently at center before tapering back toward the corners. Just enough.
Their proportions are particularly good. Generous enough to feel substantial at a dining table, but tailored enough to slip behind a desk or wait beside a sideboard until dinner gains two unexpected guests.
Quietly luxurious, slightly masculine, and very Dutch.
