Few designers understood how to make furniture feel simultaneously primitive and refined quite like Bart van Bekhoven. His work strips away ornament entirely, relying instead on silhouette, proportion, and material to create atmosphere. The Charel chair may be one of his most sculptural forms.

This pair of 1990s examples is upholstered in rich cognac leather that has softened and deepened beautifully with time, emphasizing the chairs’ muscular, barrel shaped bodies. The forms feel grounded and enveloping, almost geological in their weight, yet the lines remain remarkably controlled. Two front legs, wrapped in black leather, anchor the silhouette with a sharp graphic contrast, while at the rear, a single sweeping fin-like back leg introduces an almost aerodynamic gesture.

That tension between heaviness and movement is what makes van Bekhoven’s work so compelling. The chairs feel deeply architectural, but never rigid, carrying the kind of quiet authority that defines the best Belgian and Dutch interiors.
