Few designers understood the emotional weight of leather quite like Bart van Bekhoven. His furniture resists trend entirely, operating instead in that rare territory between architecture and instinct, where proportion, material, and silhouette do all the talking. The Cocoon chair remains his defining statement.
This pair of 1990s examples is sculpted entirely in rich cognac leather, their forms curving inward and outward with the controlled tension of a tailored garment. The backs rise into a sharp central peak that recalls the prow of a ship cutting through water, giving the chairs an unmistakable sense of movement even at rest. At the rear, a leather wrapped roll foot softens the profile while grounding the silhouette with a distinctly handcrafted detail.
Time has only improved them. The leather has deepened into a warm, burnished surface that catches light beautifully, emphasizing every curve, fold, and contour with cinematic richness.
