19th Century American Empire Side Table

19th Century American Empire Side Table
Crafted of glowing 19th century American cherry, this side table rises on a turned pedestal that unfurls into three scrolled legs — and then, just when you think you understand it, those legs resolve into whimsical ball feet. Not stiff. Not severe. But confident, almost playful. They are what stopped us. That small flourish of personality at floor level, as if the maker allowed himself a private smile.
The proportions are elegant and self-assured. A single drawer sits neatly beneath the overhanging top, practical yet discreet. Inside, a later handwritten inscription hints at Maryland origins and family lineage — folklore perhaps, but irresistible.
The surface has mellowed into a deep, burnished cherry glow that only decades can produce. In lamplight, it feels almost edible.
Placed beside a chair or anchoring a hallway vignette, it reads as both sculpture and utility — steadfast, soulful, and entirely unforgettable.
