There is something almost wonderfully contrary about Adirondack furniture: the people commissioning the great camps of the 19th century had fortunes built on railroads, banking and industry, yet what they wanted in the woods was furniture made from sticks.
This mid-20th century American twig table belongs to that tradition, fashioned from willow saplings bent while green into a rhythmic series of Gothic-like arches. The technique required surprisingly little machinery and considerable instinct, knowing just how far a branch could be persuaded before it broke.
Found in Minnesota, the table has a square top above its wonderfully animated twig framework, with a slatted lower shelf adding another layer of practical usefulness. The willow has aged into the wonderfully varied surface that only bark, time and handling can produce.
