These mid-20th-century American wing chairs have all the ingredients of traditional country furniture, but someone clearly had more fun with the recipe. The backs rise tall and lean, capped by sharply pointed wings and a pierced geometric fretwork panel that gives the otherwise straightforward frames an unexpected graphic punch. Curving arms sweep forward with almost exaggerated ease, while square legs and simple stretchers keep everything firmly grounded.

The wood has aged beautifully, with a warm, uneven surface that gives the chairs character without making them feel remotely precious. We’ve newly upholstered them in a pale, nubby indoor/outdoor fabric, deliberately quiet against all that architecture and virtually impervious to actual life. Dogs, children, cocktails, muddy paws: carry on.

They’re country chairs without the clichés. A little eccentric, surprisingly modern in silhouette, and proof that practical furniture needn’t surrender an ounce of personality.
